about

'birdsong (for Ai Weiwei)' was written to bring to people's attention the recent arrest of Chinese Artist and Political Activist Ai Weiwei. The title refers to a building he designed for the Beijing Olympics called 'the birds nest.

The piece itself is constructed from looped recordings of birdsong which become progressively more distorted as the piece progresses.

'O swallow swallow/ Le Prince d’Aquitaine à la tour abolie' is likewise constructed from recordings of bird song. This recording is based more upon abstraction rather than distortion and each track is given a title based upon a poem about or featuring the bird who's song is being sampled.

Lastly there is an unreleased track included here 'douglas byng suffers transmogrification into the form of a bird' which samples a recording of the Queer Music Hall star Douglas Bing titled 'I'm a bird. ~ elizabeth Veldon
